In 2008, Shanghai’s agricultural sector recorded an added value of 11.18 billion yuan, up 0.7% from the previous year according to the comparable prices. The city’s total agricultural output value reached 28.07 billion yuan in 2008,almost the same as the previous year, including 13.573billion yuan from the planting sector, up 1.5% over 2007.

Export of Farm Products

The city has speeded up development of brand farm products and witnessed continued fast growth of its export of agricultural farm products. As of the end of 2008, the city has certified 571 farm products as safe and superior, including 380 residue-free farm products, 37 green products, and 154 organic foods. The city exported 1.97 billion yuan worth of agricultural products, up 12.4% over 2007. The exported products, ranging from vegetables, flowers, edible mushrooms, fruit and special aquatic products to processed poultry products, went to Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, the United States and Europe. As of the end of 2008,there were more than 180 enterprises in the city dealing in export of farm products.

Development of Modern Agriculture

By the end of 2008, the city had 73,300 hectares of modern cropland and 12,700 hectares of modern vegetable farms. The city also promoted agricultural technology among the rural households. By the end of the year, the city had 507 technology demonstration farms and 2,754model families of farm technology. The city also speeded up its reorganization of its agriculture sector. There were210 agricultural demonstration zones, 12 city-level mod-ern agricultural parks and 448 leading agricultural enterprises.
