Subway System
The city’s efforts to develop the subways and build a modern traffic network typical of a modern metropolis since 1990s have paid off, with its road network ranking the most sophisticated of its kind in the country. By the end of 2008, the city had built eight subway lines and a maglev line, covering a total of 264.3 kilometers, compared to 63 kilometers in 2002, and transport- ing 3.08 million passengers a day. By 2012 when Shanghai will have built 13 subway lines, with a total length of 500 kilometers, transporting more than 8 million passengers a day.
Subway routes
With a total length of 36.89 kilometers, the Metro Line 1 goes from Xinzhuang to Fujin Road, with 28 stops and a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. Line 2 is an east-west artery extending 25.72 kilometers, with 17 stops, from Songhong Road in the west across the Huangpu River to Zhangjiang High-tech Park in Pudong. Line 3 is the country’s first elevated metro line. It extends 40.5 kilometers, with 29 stops, from Shanghai South Railway Station in the southwest to Jiangyang Rd N. in the northeast. Line 4 covers 27 kilometers, with 22 stops, including 9 that it shares with Line 3. The 17.2- kilometer Line 5, with 11 stops, joins Line 1 at Xinzhuang. Line 6, from Jiyang Road S. in the south to Gangcheng Rd in north, is 33 kilometers long and has 28 stops and is interchangeable with Lines 2 and 4 at the Century Avenue Station and with Line 4 at Lancun Road Station. The first phase of Line 8, covering 23.3 kilometers, goes from the northern Shiguang Road to Yaohua Road at the southern end. It has 21 stops, sharing the People’s Square Station with Lines 1 and 2 and the Xizang Rd S. Station with Line 4. Line 9 starts at Songjiang New Town in the south and ends at Yishan Road in the north. It is 31 kilometers long and has 13 stops.

Exemplary Maglev Line
It is the first commercial maglev line in the world to be put into use. It is
also the first maglev line in China de- signed for transportation, sightseeing
and tour trips. It con- nects Pudong International Airport with the expressways
crossing the downtown. With a total length of 30 kilometers, the maglev train
has a designed speed limit of 430 kilometers per hour. The whole trip takes
seven minutes. It started operation in December 2002.
