Boasting advanced sports facilities, the city every year hosts a series of important international and national sports events. In 2005, the city successfully hosted 36 international and 42 domestic events, including the F1 China Grand Prix, the 48th World Table Tennis Championship and Tennis Master’s Cup. At the 10th National Games, Shanghai athletes won 26 gold, 48 silver and 44.5 bronze medals, a group 2105.7 points, placed third in numbers of medal and group ranking.

-- Shanghai Stadium Covering a built-up area of 150,000 square meters, Shanghai Stadium is a comprehensive sports center with a unique architectural style. With 80,000 seats, the stadium has facilities not only for sports events, but also for cultural performances, fitness and recreation, boarding and catering offices, shopping and exhibitions.

-- Shanghai International Circuit Located in Anting Town of Jiading District, the circuit occupies an area of 5.3 square kilometers. The circuit, in the shape of the Chinese character for the first word of Shanghai, extends 5.45 kilometers and has 14 different bends. The racing section has a width ranging from 13 to 20 meters. The highest up-going slope stands at 3% and the down slope 8%. Its highest speed limit is 327 kilometers per hour. It can provide space for nearly 200,000 spectators, including 50,000 seats.

-- Hongkou Soccer Stadium Besides being the first specialized soccer stadium in China and Asia, Hongkou Soccer Stadium is an actually multi-functional sport complex. Covering a total construction area of 72,900 square meters, the stadium boasts 35,000 seats and 47 boxes. The soccer field has lawn heating and large-capacity drainage equipment, the first of its kind in China. The stadium cannot only hold world-level soccer games, but also has facilities for table tennis, fitness, roller-skating, cliff-climbing and other leisure and recreational activities. So, it provides an ideal fitness and recreation place for local residents.

-- China Disabled People's Sports and Art Training Center It is the first such facility in China built by the China Federation of Disabled People to train national disabled athletes and artists. Located at Qibao Town in Minhang District, the center covers an area of 44,000 square meters. It has swimming pools, ball game halls and other function rooms for performance rehearsals. It also has a non-commercial seven-story apartment building. Of its total floor space of 21,400 square meters, 80,380 square meters are used for sports activities.

--Qizhong Tennis Center Located on Kunyang Road N. in Minhang District, the facility covers 386,000 square meters and has a floor area of 85,400 square meters. It houses a 15,000-seat main court, a 6,000-seat court, 20 indoor courts, 22 outdoor courts, a tennis activities center, a tennis club, rooms for tennis-related matches and other facilities. It opened in 2005.
