Shanghai hosts a series of national and international sports events every year thanks to its modern sports facilities. In 2008, the city hosted 49 inter- national sports events and 52 domestic ones, including the Shanghai soccer matches for the Beijing Olympics, F1 2008 Shanghai Grand Prix and ATP Master’s Cup. The city also witnessed the relay of the torches for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. At the Beijing Olympics, Shanghai’s 66 athletes and 20 coaches joined the China delegation, won 4.5 golds, three silvers and 10 bronzes, broke three world records, two Olympics records and five Asian records at the event.
