The General Standards for the Labeling of Prepackaged Food are national
compulsory standards related to the health and safety of every consumer.
It requires the production enterprise to mark the quality (including safety)
information of the food in the form of the compulsory national standards. This
has changed the previously confusing issues of food labeling, ensured the rights
of access to information for the general consumer, and promoted the healthy,
ordered development of the food industry. It is applicable for all the labeling
of prepackaged food presented to the consumer.
Prepackaged food refers to "food that has undergone quantitative
prepackaging, or has been packed or canned in a container and directly presented
to the consumer". The new General Standards for the Labeling of Prepackaged Food
require that the food processing enterprise must correctly mark the labeling in
line with the standards. The items that must be marked for prepackaged food
include: the food name, ingredients list, net weight and solid substance weight,
name and address of the manufacturer, production date (or packaging date) and
preservation period, and product standard number. If the consumers find that the
marked labeling is inconsistent with the actual quality, they can legally appeal
and receive compensation.
