The two parties of the marriage shall meet the following conditions:

(1) They are old enough as stipulated: 22 years of age if male and 20 years of age if female;

(2) they marry with free will and are single;

(3) they do not have lineal descent or collateral consanguinity within three generations (inapplicable to foreigners);

(4) they are not considered unsuitable for marriage due to particular diseases;

(5) the Chinese party must be a Shanghai citizen with registered permanent residence, and

(6) both parties register and obtain the marriage certificate at the Shanghai Marriage (Adoption) Registration Center.
