In the case of the emigration of a foreignerĄ¯s corpse to his/her nation for
burial if he/she dies in Shanghai, the undertaker shall follow the procedures
below:
1. Obtain a death certificate
Bring the Medical Certificate of Death issued by a hospital, the passport of
the deceased, entrustment documents and passport or ID card of the trustor, and
the necropsy report issued by the Shanghai Public Security Bureau in case of
accidental death, to the Shanghai Entry and Exit Management Office, located at
333 Wusong Road, to obtain the death certificate of a foreigner.
2. Obtain the death notarization
Bring the Medical Certificate of Death issued by a hospital, the death
certificate of a foreigner or necropsy report issued by Shanghai Public Security
Bureau, the passport of the deceased, and the ID card of the trustor to the
district or municipal notarization authority to obtain the death notarization.
3. Deregister the passport of the deceased at the consulate
Obtain a corpse passport and entry permit in both Chinese and the language of
the destination country, ask the consulate to inform the relatives of the
deceased and obtain the compensation regarding personal insurance.
4. Have the corpse placed in a coffin by the funeral house
Sign a contact with the funeral house, determine the move and anticorrosion
of the corpse, the mourning ceremony upon encoffining and transportation.
5. Move the corpse into health quarantine
Notify the Municipal Quarantine Authority to undertake the health quarantine
of the corpse at the day of encoffining, subject to the Medical Certificate of
Death issued by a hospital, the death certificate of a foreigner issued by the
Public Security Bureau, the passport of the deceased, the death notarial deed,
the identity certificate of the trustor and the Certificate of Health
Quarantine.
6. The funeral house that undertakes the funeral shall issue the Certificate
of International Corpse Transport.
7. The airport shall handle the corpse transport, ticket booking and customs
declaration process.
