What is an Environment Label?
(03/25/2008)

An Environment Label is also called a Green Label or an Ecological Label. It means that government departments or public and private organizations grant certificates to the manufacturers concerned, according to the environmental standards. The certificates demonstrate that the whole process, including manufacturing, using and disposing of the products concerned is up to the environmental protection standards, and show that it is not hazardous or slightly hazardous to the environment and meanwhile it is beneficial to the renewal and recycle of the resources.

Generally, the government authorizes environment label work to environmental protection organizations. The Environment Label can certify that the products are up to the standards, therefore it can be used as a certificate. A chamber of commerce, enterprise or another organization can apply for the label and the registration. They should have the ability to assess and the responsibility to guarantee the label-holding products. Thus, the label has the characteristics of authoritativeness and carries much weight. Since it can certify only the labeled products, it has the characteristics of a specified certificate. Given the rise of the environmental standards, the label must be reassessed every three to five years; consequently, it characterizes the term of validity. Since the label-holding products cannot make up a high percentage of the market, the label also has the characteristics of percentage limitation.

The design of China's State Environment Label consists of a green mountain, blue water, the sun and ten loops. The center of the design indicates the environment humans are indispensable of. The overlapping ten loops form the outer part of the design, showing the participation of the public. The whole design of the label implies that "all the people unite together for the common cause of protecting the environment that humans are indispensable of".
