According to the differences in service functions, the value-added services provided by DTV can be categorized into Cable DTV and Interactive DTV (ITV for short). ITV can be classified into semi-interactive digital TV (semi-interactive TV for short) and duplex interactive digital TV (duplex interactive TV for short).

(1) Digital TV broadcasting (digital audio broadcasting included)

Providing high-quality digital TV programs with a standard resolution, including local read-time encoding programs, rebroadcasting of satellite digital TV programs, Near Video on Demand (NVOD), Near Audio on Demand (NAOD) and stereo music channel and encrypted pay digital-TV service (PAY-TV).

(2) Semi-interactive TV

With interactive application software and data broadcasting technology, information with an interface of both pictures and text is sent to the user's Top Box. The functional services provided include multimedia magazines, entertainment express, lottery information, world of books, etc. The menu of the TV program provides the timetable of the weekly TV programs and brief introductions; information consultation provides real-time stock information for Shanghai and Shenzhen, the current status and forecast of Shanghai's weather and so on; TV Games provide intellectual, sports games and games for children. Furthermore, the contents can be expanded to features like real estate information, everyday life services, leisure and entertainment, human resource markets, music shops, music hits, music and video arenas, etc.

(3) Duplex interactive TV

Through adding communication equipment onto the technological platform, with a Top Box embedded with a Cable Modem, "information interaction" can be achieved. Services like internet surfing via the TV, emailing via the TV and pay-per-view events (PPV and IPPV) can be provided. Also, it can be expanded to include services such as TV business, on-line games, distance education, on-line quizzes, home banking and video on demand etc. Later on, it will be able to be integrated with IP phones, to provide integrated services of the three networks.
