Drug addiction is an offence against the law.

According to the applied provisions in the Decisions on Drug Prohibition promulgated by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, any person taking and/or injecting drugs shall be taken into custody by China's public security authority for a period no more than 15 days, and/or fined up to RMB 2,000.00. The drugs as well as the taking and injecting instruments shall be surrendered.

If a person taking and/or injecting drugs becomes addicted to drugs, he/she shall, besides the aforementioned penalties and/or fines, be given the compulsory abandonment of drug habits and the relevant remedies and education.

If a person starts to take and/or inject drugs again after the compulsory abandonment of drug habits, he/she shall be put into reeducation and rehabilitation through effort and be given the compulsory abandonment of drug habits.
