What should one prepare before meeting a lawyer?
(03/24/2008)

Anyone concerned with the efficiency of work should not neglect the actual preparations before doing anything. If one wishes to both enhance their efficiency and save money to the extent possible, when seeking help from a lawyer, one should make the proper preparations before meeting a lawyer. These preparations may be very simple, taking a small amount of time and energy, but can be critical to one's cooperation with the actual lawyer afterwards.

It may, for example, occur that one feels that they have made sufficient preparations for everything but, at the time when one actually talks to their lawyer, find that they have neglected many problems or issues. As a result, the first thing one should do is to make a call to their lawyer, let him/her advise what should be done in the following steps, arrange a meeting time, and act according to what the lawyer says.

A lawyer may let their client do many things, or nothing sometimes. Nevertheless, a client must list everything they want to talk to their lawyer about¨Cthe facts and details of the case - and note each claim briefly in writing, preferably in order, to offer neat and specific descriptions upon meeting the lawyer. Most lawyers charge by the hour in providing legal consultation services, therefore, one should aim to get the maximum amount of information in the minimum amount time.

In addition, a client may be asked to submit many documents and materials to their lawyer. The client should sort them in some sort of order, assuring quick access to these when citing certain parts and the lawyer¡¯s mastery of the key issues in the shortest reading time.

Finally, when it is time to meet, do not be late.

Note: the above preparations are not only for the first meeting with a lawyer, but also for any and all following meetings.
