Sixty-seven key city government urban construction projects were either
completed or going smoothly, government's spokeswoman Jiao Yang told yesterday’s
press conference.
The projects include transport infrastructure and industrial upgrades for
environmental purposes.
Jiao said construction of the rail network is well underway with Metro Line
6, the first phase of Lines 8 and 9 and the new parts of Lines 1 and 4 scheduled
to open this weekend, bringing the total number of Metro stations in service to
168.
In addition, construction of Lines 7, 10 and 11 is running smoothly and work
on the eastern extension of Line 2 has begun.
Six new tunnels under the Huangpu River are being built and a gigantic
vehicle underpass below the Bund area, the Zhongshan Road E1, has started
construction.
A series of projects designed to create an environmentally-friendly city,
including the third phase of the Suzhou Creek clean-up and renovations of the
Zhuyuan and Bailonggang sewage treatment plants have started.
The new Chenshan Botanic Garden is under construction near Sheshan Hill in
Songjiang District.
A large part of a new sewage collection network totaling 1,600 kilometers in
suburban areas has been finished to improve water quality.
Construction on several Expo-related structures has started, including the
red China Pavilion "the Crown of the East" and the Theme Pavilion that will
showcase innovative urban living exhibitions at World Expo Shanghai 2010.
The city will focus on preparation of the 2010 Expo in its major-projects
construction plan next year and promote projects that are energy efficient and
will benefit residents, Jiao said.
