The city has announced the names of 287 torch bearers for the Beijing 2008
Olympic Games Torch Relay. The lineup includes five foreigners and a runner from
Hong Kong.
Shanghai has selected 416 torch carriers to be part of the relay that makes
its way through the city in May.
The remainder of the names will be
announced after they have been examined and approved by Beijing Organizing
Committee for the Olympic Games.
The torch carriers include Simon Mackinnon from the United Kingdom, Peter
Weber from Switzerland, Frederic Carencotte from France, Vincent Lo from Hong
Kong, American Chinese woman Nora Wu, and 14-year-old Natasha Weaser from the
United States.
The 416 torch carriers and 101 escorts will attend the torch relay on May 20
and 21 in the city.
The route has not yet been announced.
The torch carriers were chosen from 2,084 applications by locals and
foreigners.
The winners come from all walks of life, including workers,
farmers, soldiers, policemen, doctors, teachers and retirees.
The oldest torch carrier is Bian Yue'er, 80, from Luwan District. There are
50 torch bearers under 25 years, 212 are between 25 to 45 and 143 are aged above
45.
Across the country, 19,400 will carry the torch.
