The Efforts to Change Four Lanes into Five Have Been Quite Effective. Traffic on Inner Ring Road in Shanghai Has Been Improved

10/29/2004

The problem of traffic jam on inner ring road (Cao Xi Road Intersection - Yan'an Road West Intersection) has been solved recently. The measure of changing four lanes into five, initiated by Shanghai Urban Administration Department and implemented by the department of traffic police began to take effect.

The inner side of inner ring road ( Cao Xi Road Intersection - Yan'an Road West Intersection) has always been very crowded. There is huge traffic flow on the entry ramp of Wu hong Road, causing a lot of problem to the main road. Also, vehicles cannot get off the ring through through the exit ramp on Wu Zhong Road, which makes the inner ring road more crowded. There were occasions when the traffic on the crossroads of Wu Zhong Road and Zhong Shan Road West broke down totally during rush hour.

It is reported that after the efforts to change the four lanes into five, that is, by moving the central separation frusta to the outside, the two lanes on the inner side can be changed into three and the total number of lane on the viaduct is changed from four to five, which effectively solved the problem of traffic jam on the inner ring road from Cao xi Road Intersection to Yan'an Road West Intersection. Also, the problem of traffic jam on the crossroad of hong Shan Road West and Wu Zhong Road during rush hours has also been solved. While the traffic flow during morning rush hours remain the same, the vehicle speed has been increased. During afternoon rush hours, although traffic flow is increased by 10 to 21%, the vehicle speed remains the same.
