IT Application Finds the Way for Vehicles. Administration of Modern Traffic Information Began in Shanghai

The "Electronic Eyes" (Dynamic Traffic Information Board), which were in operation on Yan'an Road Viaduct, will soon be installed in North-South Viaduct and inner ring road. Vehicles can choose their lane in advance according to the information on the board so as to increase their efficiency. The traffic information collection system will also be expanded at crossroads. "Electronic guards" will be installed at 150 busy road sections by the end of the year so as to provide policy guidance for the renovation of road network. it is reported from Shanghai Urban Infrastructure Engineerng Administration on June 14th that various kinds of information technologies have been applied in Shanghai to solve the problem of traffic jam in Shanghai.

In the recent years, a large number of road facilities have been built in Shanghai. However, with the increase of motorized vehicles and the urban space becoming more and more tense, building roads to improve traffic situation is not realistic and not scientific. By referring to the successful experience of Japan, USA and other developed countries, Shanghai plans to improve the efficiency of road traffic by means of modern traffic information administration.

The launching of traffic information collecting systm at crossroads will provide scientific basis for improving the road networ. By means of expanding the roads and extending the roads, we can actually build smooth road networks. However, it is a big issue to decide which way needs the renovation and the extention. On Xi Zang Road Middle, Yan'an Road East, Xu Jia Hui Road and Chong Qing Road South and other busy roads, experts of urban infrastructure get the data collected by electronic guards buried underground and are thus able to decide on which roads need renovation. Small schemes ay improve the efficiency of the whole network.

Improving the information collection system in downtown area of the city makes it possible for vehicles to now the traffic situation in advance so as to avoid traffic jam. Experts of urban infrastructure bury a group of round testing cables every 400 meters on the lanes of viaduct so as to get such datas as traffic flow, road occupancy, vehicle type and vehicle speed. According to the test, after installing the information guiding system on Yan'an Road Viaduct, the efficiency of vehicles increased by 20%. It is reported that there will be more than 20 traffic information boards on the two ways of North-south Viaduct (inside the inner ring road), two ways of inner ring road, and the east to west side of Yan'an road Viaduct. Viaduct supervision and control center will also be upgraded.

By means of these information technologies, all the origial infrastructure facilities have been used to their full extent. In Huang Pu District, vehicles may have to drive for several rounds in order to find a parking space. After the installation of parking information board, they can find parking lots easily, thus, reducing the traffic pressure on roads. By means of the latest "Traffic Emulating Software", if urban infrastructure experts want to renovate a certain road section, they can type in certain datas, and the computer and emulate the traffic situation after the renovation of the roads, which helps the experts greately.
