The Suppler of Crude Water in Shanghai and the Quality of Tap Water Are Normal. Shanghai Will Not Suffer From Drought.

I. The demand and supply of water in Shanghai are balanced. Right now, the total supply capacity of tap water is 1.064 million cubic meter/day. The average amount of water supply in April was 7.19 million cubic meters/day (suburban area 2.245 million cubic meters/day). The average supply in May was 7.41 million cubic meters/day (suburban area 2.185 million cubic meters/day). The supply and demand is basically balanced. However, with the development of social economy and the improvement of the living standards, there will be imbalance among different areas and during different time sections. Tap water factories will coordinate and adjust the overall supply to guarantee tap water supply.

II. From January to May this year, water quality in the upper stream of Huang Pu River wasn¡¯t so good. (High volume of nitrogen and ammonia). According to statistics collected in July, at the moment, the water quality is back to normal. According to statistics from Shanghai Water Supply and Water Quality Inspection Center, 99.5% of water in Shanghai meets standards. The supply of qualified water is normal.

III. To solve the problem of unstable water quality, Shanghai Municipal Water Affairs Bureau worked together with Shanghai Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau to strengthened law-enforcement in the upper stream of Huang Pu River in accordance to protection regulations as approved by Shanghai Municipal NPC. At the same time, Shanghai Municipal Water Affairs Bureau will work together with Tai Hu Lake Administration Bureau to prevent pollution in the upper stream of Huang Pu River. Shanghai Crude Water Supply Company has finished the projects to install net at the water collection point and the project of bioprocessing.

IV. Shanghai will not suffer from drought. To increase the water supply capability in Shanghai, to meet the demand of water supply in Pu Dong New Area and northern part of the city, the third phase of project to introduce water from Yangtze River has already been approved by Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission. By then, Chen Hang Reservoir on Yangtze River will be able to introduce 2.18 million cubic meters of water per day. Also, while strengthening the protection of upper stream of Huang Pu River and Chen Hang area, research on building reservoir on upper stream of Huang Pu river and Qingcaosha Water Source area along Yangtze River will also be started so as to create favorable condition of water supply in Shanghai.
