In the period of 1998-2002, the major construction projects of Shanghai, according to the overall plan and objective of the city development of Shanghai, guided by the requirement of enhancing city functions, promoting the economic and social development, improving the living standards of people, with rational arrangement and accelerated development, laid solid foundation for building Shanghai into a modernized international metropolis. In the last five years, a total of 200 billion RMB have been invested for major projects, accounting for 1/4 of the total fixed asset investment; completing 115 major projects. The "number one" projects include: Shanghai GM project, Yan'an Road (M) Viaduct, main body of information harbor, Shanghai Science and technology Hall, Suzhou River Comprehensive Treatment. The completion of these projects and other major projects played a vital role in optimizing industry structure, consummating the city road network, improving information level and improving the appearance and ecological environment of the city.
