Intelligent traffic construction

Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) is a real time, accurate, effective and all-around transportation and management system comprehensively applied in the whole city traffic administration system by integrating the modern information technology, communication technology and electrical sensing. The implementation of ITS will effectively relieve the lagging of city traffic information and traffic jam, reduce environment pollution, improve transportation efficiency and ensure the traffic security. On the course of Shanghai's advancement towards international metropolis, informatization and intelligentization of the city traffic has been taken as important task, introducing SCAT Sydney's self - adaptable traffic signal fee controlling system from Australia, initially establishing the intelligent management system for traffic signal in a downtown area of 7.5 square kilometers and planned to expand gradually to the application of signal management in 600 major crossroads within the central circular road. A few of advanced information application system have been developed in respect of passenger & goods transportation, industrial management, traffic information service and city planning and operation. The municipal department also invests a lot in the monitoring system for the viaducts, bridges, and tunnels. All these actions lay solid foundation for Shanghai's taking the lead to bring in the development and application of the intelligent traffic.

In 2001, Shanghai speeded up the pace towards the traffic informatization and intelligent quantification. The Shanghai traffic website, duly opened on March 23, offering the functions of publishing via internet of the whole city's traffic management, bus transfer and real time dynamic information about the water, sea and air transportation by integrating the city traffic with foreign traffic information, ranking the top in domestic related domain. Since its operation, the three types of functions serving as government website, industrial website and public service website have been increasingly apparent, with a total hits over 2.7 million person times. Shanghai city traffic center has successfully developed and applied the web-based cab industry information management system and the comprehensive statistics system. The center also cooperates with road traffic management department, municipal administration department and the concerned technical partner to have common research and development on the collection, processing and publishing of the real time dynamic information of the city road traffic. Shanghai took the lead to put through the public traffic billing system "one card through" applicable in multiple traffic locations of public traffic, cab, subway, ferry, "cargo taxi", highway, tour traffic and parking lot, with issuance number of more than 2.7 million and in people's favor. As for foreign traffic, the East China district governed by Shanghai railways offers basic remote booking service including return ticket among major cities. It is particularly remarkable that China Eastern endeavors to bolster the application and development of the information technology with the three primary systems of reservation, departure, and forwarding as the backbone, investing approximately RMB100 million to implement informatization project, covering airworthiness, maintenance, flight control, marketing, clearing, customer service and enterprise management in the new information system. In the second half of 2001, the passenger system (FFP) and operation control system (AOC) had been put into operation earlier or later, enabling the China Eastern's informatization degree ranking the top in domestic related domain. China Ocean Group, headquartered in Shanghai takes the initiative to develop and apply GPS position, monitoring and modern communication system and has installed and commissioned the systems in East China logistics region, North logistic region and Shanghai area. The dynamics of China Ocean's container-loaded truck scattered all over the country can be displayed in the electrical map through land system operation and communication could be made and related data can be sent by the system, playing an important role on mass logistic transportation of the group.
