Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention has detected
enterovirus 71, or EV71 in 18 patients suffering hand, foot and mouth
disease.
This follows pathogenic examination of 87 HFMD cases, SHANGHAI
Health Bureau said on Friday. A further two cases were found to be caused by Cox
Asckievirus A16, another virus that results in hand, foot and mouth disease.
Some 20 intestinal viruses can lead to HFMD, while EV71 and Cox A16 are the two
commonest causes, experts said.
Local health authorities said none of the
87 patients have severe syndromes. The city reported 1,988 cases of HFMD so far
this year without fatality or a critical patient.
Fudan University's
Child-ren's Hospital and SHANGHAI Public Health Center, the two designated
hospitals for severe HFMD case, haven't received severely ill patients this
year.
"Patients with slight symptom should not be hospitalized in order
to prevent cross infection," said Luo Weifen from Fudan University's Children's
Hospital.
"Early detection, proper treatment and separation are enough to
control the disease, which usually can be cured in one week."
In order to
teach local residents proper preventative measures, medical volunteers from
district-based centers for disease control and prevention, Xinhua Hospital and
Ruijin Hospital distributed brochures and gave free consultations in seven
downtown areas yesterday. |
