The elevated ramp in the Bund has now been completely removed, the facelift
project managers said yesterday.
"We have done it very successfully and
didn't receive any complaints from residents during construction," Qin Kangde, a
spokesman of the Bund renovation project, said yesterday.
He said
constructors had successfully removed the last girder of the east ramp of the
Yan'an Elevated Road - a project which started from March 5.
He also said
most of the project was conducted during the night in order to keep traffic
disturbance at a minimum. The steel used in the ramp weighed more than 1,000
tons, engineers said.
The project is a key part of the ongoing Bund
renovation project which includes the construction of a giant two-level vehicle
tunnel to relieve ground traffic.
The removal of the ramp is to make way
for the tunnel which will link Hongkou and Huangpu districts and include a prime
section beneath Zhongshan Road E1. After the project is completed by 2010, the
Bund will be more pedestrian-friendly and have more alfresco
facilities.
