Han Zheng Meets President Pro Tempore of US Senate

On April 15, Han Zheng, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee met with Patrick Leahy, President Pro Tempore of the US Senate, and extended a warm welcome to the delegation.

Han briefed Leahy and his bicameral and bipartisan delegation on Shanghai’s socio-economic development. Shanghai boasts frequent exchanges with American cities, and was twinned with San Francisco and Chicago in 1980 and 1985 respectively, maintaining long term cooperation in trade, commerce, science, technology, culture and people-to-people exchanges. The port of Shanghai enjoys close trade ties with America, handling fifteen percent of the total bilateral trade. Many American firms have also made successful investment in Shanghai. Currently, China is opening further to the outside world, with China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone being the testing ground for exploring the fundamental institutional and regulatory systems for trade and investment facilitation that are consistent with international norms. The visit by Senator Leahy is expected to contribute to the friendly exchanges between the two countries and their cities.

Leahy and other delegation members all expressed admiration for the enormous achievement made since reform and opening up started in China and Shanghai. He believed that a strong US-China trade partnership is important and America wishes to become part of China’s rapid development. The cooperation between the two countries and between Shanghai and American cities in business, trade and culture are very meaningful and the exchanges between the youths on both sides and in language learning are especially significant, as they represent the future of the two nations.
