Yang Xiong Meets President Cavaco Silva of Portugal

On May 13, Yang Xiong, Mayor of Shanghai, met with Cavaco Silva, President of Portugal. On behalf of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and the 24 million people in Shanghai, Yang extended a warm welcome to His Excellency.

Yang thanked the Portuguese Government for its active participation in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, adding that Shanghai learnt a lot from Portugal’s experience in preparing for the World Expo in Lisbon and after-use development. He said that the World Expo has further enhanced the friendship and mutual understanding between Shanghai and Portugal. The past few years have witnessed increasing exchange and cooperation with huge potential between the two sides in various areas. The President’s visit is set to further promote exchange and cooperation between Shanghai and Portugal in ever expanding areas such as economy, science and technology, education and culture. Shanghai is now fully committed to the development of the Pilot Free Trade Zone, a testing ground of China’s initiative to deepen reform and opening-up. Shanghai strives to create a more enabling business environment for enterprises through institutional innovation as well as investment and trade facilitation. The Pilot Free Trade Zone constitutes a new starting point of reform and opening-up, and will bring about new opportunities and broader prospects for Shanghai and Portugal to deepen partnership in business and trade. Yang hopes that both sides will make good use of this platform to strengthen cooperation and increase two-way investment and trade.

“I am so glad that Shanghai is the first stop of my visit to China this time.” said Silva as he recalled affectionately his visit to Shanghai 20 years ago, and marveled at the profound changes that have taken place here. He noted that Shanghai has already become one of the most dynamic economic centers in the world and Portugal attaches great importance to its exchange and cooperation with Shanghai. He believes that the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone will play an important role in strengthening economic and trade collaboration between Portugal and China, Shanghai in particular. Portugal will seize the opportunities, and actively expand its exchange and cooperation with Shanghai in such areas as marine economy, architecture design, science and technology, culture and education in pursuit of common development.
