08.21.2014

On August 6, Mayor Yang Xiong of Shanghai met with Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Hamengkubuwono X and Mayor of Colombo Ahamed Muzammil, and signed the Agreement on Friendship Cooperation with the Yogyakarta Special Region on behalf of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

Yang said that Shanghai is an open city and is willing to work closely with cities across the world, especially its sister cities. China’s exchange with Indonesia dates back a long time ago, and Yogyakarta plays a very unique role in the development of Indonesia. The visit by the Governor and signing of the Agreement on Friendship Cooperation will enhance mutual understanding and friendly exchange. In recent years, Shanghai has devoted itself to economic restructuring and building international economic, financial, trade and shipping centers, and is poised to strengthen its cooperation with Yogyakarta in economy, culture, education and tourism. In meeting with his Colombo counterpart, Mayor Yang spoke of the long-dated friendship and strategic cooperative partnership between China and Sri Lanka. In the ten-plus years since Shanghai and Colombo were twined, the two sides have carried out fruitful city-to-city cooperation. Under the new round of Memorandum of Understanding on Sister City Relationship, Shanghai and Colombo will extend their cooperation into more areas. We welcome more promotional activities from Colombo and will encourage more Shanghai businesses to invest in Colombo.

Hamengkubuwono X said that the Agreement on Friendship Cooperation with Shanghai will enhance bilateral ties between Indonesia and China. He looks forward to more exchange with Shanghai and learning from Shanghai’s development experience.

Muzammil introduced Colombo’s socioeconomic development. He said that Shanghai and Colombo have been working closely together as sister cities, and that they welcome more investments from Shanghai to share development opportunities.
