Yang Xiong Meets New Chilean Ambassador Jorge Heine

On September 1, Mayor Yang Xiong of Shanghai met with Jorge Heine, Ambassador of Chile to China.

Yang started by saying that China and Chile are important strategic partners, and Shanghai attaches great importance to the friendly exchange with Chile and other Latin American countries. In 2001, Shanghai and Valparaiso, Chile’s second largest city, became sister-cities. Meanwhile, the ports of Shanghai and Valparaiso have also been twinned, and the two cities have carried out fruitful cooperation in many areas. Shanghai is now making an all-out effort to build the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in order to deepen reform, open up more widely and promote trade and investment facilitation. Ever since its inauguration, the FTZ has become a platform for outbound investments by Chinese enterprises. Yang said that Chinese and Chilean companies should work more closely together and make full use of the FTZ to promote bilateral trade. Shanghai is also willing to cooperate with Chile in culture, energy and tourism.

Heine pointed out that China is Chile’s biggest trade partner and Shanghai is not only a major economic and trade center in the world, but also an important gateway for Chilean companies to enter China. Chile will strengthen its ties with Shanghai by promoting cooperation in all fields. He hoped that the new FTZ can promote trade between the two countries and help more Chinese companies to invest in Chile.

Rodrigo Arcos Castro, Consul General of Chile in Shanghai, also attended the meeting.
