10.15.2014

On September 22, Mayor Yang Xiong met with Mayor Michael Rawlings of Dallas and Mayor Betsy Price of Fort Worth.

Yang first congratulated on the opening of the non-stop flight between Shanghai and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW). He pointed out that Shanghai has extensive economic and trade ties with the United States and especially with its sister-cities of San Francisco and Chicago. Dallas has many high-tech Fortune 500 companies and is home to the famous Dallas Maverick basketball team. Shanghai is willing to carry out friendly and practical cooperation with Dallas, Fort Worth and other American cities. With the launch of the non-stop flight, the two sides should not only enhance their economic ties but also promote exchange in culture, education, healthcare and tourism.

Rawlings introduced the socioeconomic development in Dallas. Dallas is the one of the fastest growing regions in the United States and the headquarters of Taxes Instrument, AT&T and some other Fortune 500 companies. The direct flight is expected to lend a big boost to the exchange between the two sides and bring more Shanghai tourists to Dallas.

Price said that Fort Worth is the second largest city in the DFW Area and the origin of the U.S. cowboy culture. She expressed her hope that the direct flight can help the two sides better understand each other’s culture and promote win-win cooperation.

Hanscom Smith, the new Consul General of United States in Shanghai, also attended the meeting.
