Yang Met with Antwerp Mayor

On October 13, at the 30th anniversary of sister city relationship, Mayor Yang Xiong of Shanghai met with a delegation led by Mayor Bart De Wever of Antwerp at the City Hall and signed with him the MOU on Friendly Cooperation between Shanghai and Antwerp 2014-2016. The two mayors also witnessed the signing of a series of cooperative agreements between institutions from the two cities.

Yang remarked that during the three decades since Shanghai and Antwerp were twinned, the sister city relations have gone from strength to strength and born abundant fruits in many fields. Along with the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ) initiative, Shanghai is pushing forward reform and opening up through institutional innovation in investment and trade regulation and opening of the financial sector. Shanghai strives to develop a system that is consistent with international norms and facilitates investment and trade, presenting a better business environment for international investors. Such goals create new platforms and opportunities for Shanghai to cooperate with sister cities such as Antwerp. Shanghai stands ready to strengthen the partnership with Antwerp in trade, commerce, science, technology, culture and education among others and further develop and strengthen the invaluable 30-year sister city friendship.

De Wever responded that Antwerp had enjoyed close and productive relationship with Shanghai for years, and he hoped that the opportunities arising from the signing of the new agreements and Shanghai’s FTZ initiative would promote further exchange and cooperation between the two sides.

Michel Malherbe, Belgian Ambassador to China and Cathy Buggenhout, Consul General of Belgium to Shanghai were present at the meeting.
