Yang Xiong Met with ATP Executive Chairman and President

On October 7, Mayor Yang Xiong of Shanghai met with and welcomed Chris Kermode, Executive Chairman and President of ATP. This is the latter’s first visit to Shanghai in his new capacity, and he came to attend the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000.

Yang said that Shanghai’s cooperation with ATP has a long history. It started in 1998 when Shanghai hosted its first Heineken Open and has extended for almost 20 years during which Shanghai first became a host city for the ATP Masters Cup and later the annual ATP Masters 1000. Such cooperation has promoted tennis in China and particularly Shanghai. In recent years, Shanghai has built more public sports facilities including tennis courts and devoted greater efforts to train domestic tennis players, so as to bring tennis closer to more people. We are willing to further cooperate with ATP in not only hosting tournaments but also training players, so that the ATP Masters 1000 can become more successful and more influential in the world.

Kermode thanked Shanghai for its great support for ATP. Thanks to successful event management, the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 has been voted as the Tournament of the Year by players. ATP will work more closely with Shanghai in event management and player training, so as to increase the global influence of the Shanghai Masters and significantly grow tennis in China and especially Shanghai.
