Han Zheng: Without Protection of Intellectual Property, There Will Be No Innovation and Creation
12.12.2014

On December 8, Han Zheng, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, met with Francis Gurry, director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and his party.

Han Zheng said that without protection of intellectual property (IP), there will be no innovation and creation. Shanghai’s innovative and creative vigor is closely bound up with IP protection. At present, Shanghai is speeding up its advance toward a globally influential scientific & technological innovation center, and one important task in the process is to enhance the awareness of rule of law and IP protection of the whole society. In promoting IP protection, the important thing is to protect, manage and use IP according to law. The Shanghai government has signed a new memorandum of understanding on cooperation with the WIPO, and as they set out for more cooperation he wished the two parties new success.

Francis Gurry said that the WIPO’s cooperation with China and Shanghai has been very successful and of great significance. Innovation, aside from that in science & technology, should also be made in institutions and mechanisms, for this will better promote IP protection. Shanghai has set a good example in this regard. He hoped to see more cooperation between the two sides, to which the WIPO will make active contributions.

Shen Changyu, commissioner of the China State Intellectual Property Office and Zhao Wen, vice-mayor of Shanghai, were present at the meeting.
