2014 China International Friendship Cities Conference & International Urban Innovation Seminar Held in Guangzhou

    2014 China International Friendship Cities Conference & International Urban Innovation Seminar was held in Guangzhou from November 27 to 29. More than 600 participants from 56 countries attended the event. Chen Changzhi, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Hu Sishe, vice-president of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Eugenio Rojas, speaker of Bolivian Senate, Willem Kok, former prime minister of the Netherlands, and Jose Luis Schafer, chairman of the Brazilian National Union of State Legislatures, spoke at the opening ceremony of the conference.

    Centering around a theme of “My City, My Dream”, the conference included a series of sessions on the topics of “Friendship Cities and Urban Innovation”, “Urbanization and Smart Cities” and “Silk Road and Cooperation between Local Governments”. On the sidelines of the meetings, exhibitions on the history of Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the achievements in work on China’s international friendship cities and the innovations of Guangzhou and an international children’s painting show were held. The appraisal, selection and awarding ceremony of the 2nd Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (the Guangzhou Award) were also held during the three-day event.

    In addition, the conference held an awarding ceremony in commendation of Chinese and foreign friendship cities. In total, 81 foreign cities including San Francisco of the United States, Hamburg of Germany and Danedin of New Zealand were presented with the “Friendship City Cooperation Award”, and 38 and 5 Chinese provinces, regions, municipalities and prefectures including Shanghai the “International Friendship City Cooperation Award” and the “International Friendship City Special Contribution Award” respectively, by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the China International Friendship Cities Association.
