Meeting Commemorating the 110th Anniversary of Dr. Bucur Clejan’s Birth and Mme. Clejan Nelly Chin Pu Held in Shanghai
01.07.2015

On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Romania, the 70th anniversary of the world anti-fascist war and the War of Resistance against Japan by the Chinese people and the 110th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Bucur Clejan, “The Meeting in Commemoration of the 110th Anniversary of Dr. Bucur Clejan’s Birth and Mme. Clejan Nelly Chin Pu”, jointly sponsored by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and the China-Romania Friendship Association and co-organized by the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Soong Ching-ling Mausoleum, was held at Soong Ching-ling Mausoleum in Shanghai on December 26.

In his speech at the meeting, Li Jianping, vice-president of the CPAFFC, said that during the hard years when the Chinese people fought heroically for freedom and liberation, a large number of foreign people with lofty ideals like Norman Bethune, Edgar Snow, Anna Louise Strong and Kwarkanath S. Kotnis came to China, who made valuable contributions to the Chinese liberation cause. Among them there were Dr. Bucur Clejan and Mme. Clejan Nelly Chin Pu, whom we are commemorating today. They went back to Romania after the war, where they still did all they could for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Romania and for China-Romania friendship. Dr. Bucur Clejan is praised by China’s state leaders as “a Norman Bethune-type internationalist fighter having a threefold relationship with China – comrade, friend and relative”.

“Today, we are holding this event in memory of Dr. Bucur Clejan and Clejan Nelly Chin Pu to carry forward their internationalist spirit and glorious deeds on the one hand and, on the other, to deepen the mutual understanding of the Chinese and Romanian peoples and the cooperation between the two countries under a new situation in the new century, so that the traditional friendship between China and Romania will be passed on from generation to generation.” said Vice-President Li Jianping.

Bucur Clejan was born in Romanmia. He came to China with an international medical team to aid the Chinese people who were in the War of Resistance against Japan in 1939. He went successively to Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangdong, Henan and Hubei provinces to rescue and treat wounded soldiers and also actively helped collect medicines and medical instruments. After the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan, he remained in China and worked with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, Henan branch, where he married Clejan Nelly Chin Pu, who was a Chinese nurse with the Red Cross Hospital. During China’s War of Liberation, the couple risked their lives getting the UN medicines to the refugee camps and, surmounting untold difficulties, they shipped the medical supplies collected to the liberated areas, thus making contributions to the liberation cause of the Chinese people.
