Yang Xiong Meets Spanish Prime Minister
11.12.2014

On September 25, Mayor Yang Xiong had a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain and his delegation. Yang extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Rajoy on behalf of the Shanghai Municipal Government and people in Shanghai.

Yang thanked the Spanish government for the strong support given to the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, saying that Shanghai had learned a lot from Spain’s experience of holding the World Expo, and its participation in the Expo Shanghai had improved the mutual understanding and friendship between the two sides. Shanghai and Barcelona were sister-cities and had carried out practical cooperation in areas including business and trade, culture and urban planning. Taking the Prime Minister’s visit as an opportunity, Shanghai is ready to strengthen exchange and cooperation with Spain in such areas as business and trade as well as tourism. As part of the important national drive to further deepen reform and opening-up, Shanghai is speeding up the development of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (SPFTZ) with the introduction of a series of new policies including the negative list approach to facilitate trade and investment. Spanish companies were welcome to enhance cooperation with their Chinese counterparts and capitalize on the strengths of the SPFTZ to achieve more growth.

Rajoy applauded Shanghai for its charm and energy. He said that China is Spain’s third biggest export market and the two countries enjoy huge potential in cooperation on business and trade. Spain is closely following the development of the SPFTZ and will encourage its companies to seize opportunities for stepping up cooperation and achieving mutual progress. Spain will speed up the visa issuing process to encourage Chinese tourists including those from Shanghai to visit the country.

Manuel Valencia, Spanish Ambassador to China and Ambassador Zhu Bangzao of China to Spain also attended the meeting.
