01.13.2015

Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong met with H.E. Rafael Correa Delgado, president of Ecuador and the delegation led by him at Xingguo guesthouse on January 9, expressing warm welcome to the distinguished guests from the South American country.

Mayor Yang Xiong said that on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ecuador, the heads of state of the two countries determined to forge a strategic partnership between the two countries and signed a series of cooperation agreements. He offered congratulations to the president on his highly fruitful visit to China. He went on to say that Shanghai attaches great importance to its friendly ties with Ecuador and the economic and trade cooperation between the two sides has developed steadily. Since the two cities became sister cities more than 10 years ago, Shanghai and Guayaquil have had very good cooperation and exchanges. Shanghai will play a larger role in the development of China-Ecuador friendly relations. As China’s important economic center, Shanghai is home to a mass number of modern service and advanced manufacturing enterprises and scientific & technological research institutions, and is striving to turn itself into an international economic, financial, trade and shipping center. Also, Shanghai is a major port of departure for outbound trips by Chinese tourists. Shanghai and Ecuador, therefore, have wide areas and huge potential for their cooperation. He believed that the Ecuadorian president’s visit will promote the cooperation and exchange between the two sides in economy, trade and personnel.

President Correa said that as Latin-American countries and China are highly complementary, they should have deeper and closer cooperative relations. This year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Ecuador and the relations between the two sides are in the best of times. He looked forward to having more exchange and cooperation with China and Shanghai. He also believed that with the implementation of the visa exemption policy, Ecuador will attract more Chinese and Shanghai tourists.
