Han Zheng Meets Governor-General of New Zealand

    On July 20, Han Zheng, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, met with H.E. Jerry Mateparae, governor- general of New Zealand, expressing warm welcome to him on behalf of the 24 million people of Shanghai.
     
    Han Zheng said that Chinese President Xi Jinping successfully visited New Zealand last year and the China-New Zealand relations were upgraded to comprehensive strategic partnership. Shanghai has had close exchange and contacts with different parts of New Zealand. In particular, since becoming sister cities more than 20 years ago, Shanghai and Danedin have had sound cooperation in the economic, trade, scientific & technological and educational areas. Since reform and opening up in China started over 30 years ago, great changes have taken place in Shanghai and the living standards of its people have been greatly improved. At present, we are carrying forward our reform and opening up and resolving problems we encounter on our way forward in order that reform and opening up will better benefit the people. He believed that through his visit the New Zealand governor-general will know more about China and Shanghai and further promote the exchange between the two countries and between Shanghai and New Zealand cities, particularly the cultural exchange and friendship between the young people of the two countries.
     
    Governor-General Jerry Mateparae said that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to New Zealand last year greatly promoted the development of New Zealand-China relations. Shanghai is a vibrant city and an important gateway for New Zealand to enter China, so he hoped the two sides will further deepen cooperation in various areas and make common efforts to fully realize the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. We encourage the young people of the two countries to enhance through visits their understanding of each other’s cultures and push forward the relations between the two countries.
     
    Wang Lutong, Chinese ambassador to New Zealand, and Yin Hong, a leading official of Shanghai, were present at the meeting.
