Yang Xiong Meets Premier of Queensland State, Australia
Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong met with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Australia, and her party on September 30.
Mayor Yang Xiong said that China and Australia have maintained friendly relations for a long time and that the Free Trade Agreement between China and Australia signed last June has injected fresh vigor into the economic and trade ties between the two countries. Since becoming sister city/state in 1989, Shanghai and Queensland have accomplished remarkable achievements in their cooperation in the educational, scientific & technological, biological and pharmaceutical areas. Through World Expo Shanghai 2010, the Shanghai people have gained more understanding of Australia and Queensland, and Brisbane’s experience in its post-World Expo development has given us inspirations. In accordance with the requirements by the central authority, Shanghai is currently pushing forward the building of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, with a focus put on further facilitating investment and trade and speeding up financial reform and opening up. This will provide a good opportunity for increasing our economic and trade cooperation and an important window for investment by business communities of both sides. Also, Shanghai is accelerating the pace of building a globally influential scientific & technological innovation center. He wished to see more exchange and cooperation and more results from science and technology innovation, on the basis of existing cooperation between the institutions of higher learning and science & technology research institutions.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that Queensland-Shanghai friendly relations can be traced back to a long time ago. We attach great importance to and are actively implementing the MOU for friendly cooperation signed between the two sides. She called for more friendly exchange between the youth and more cooperation in science & technology innovation, bio-pharmaceutical and educational areas.
