12th Shanghai International Youth Interactive Friendship Camp Opens

On July 13, the 12th Shanghai International Youth Interactive Friendship Camp opened at Shanghai Oriental Land. Jing Ying, vice-counsel of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, attended the opening ceremony. Nearly 130 youngsters and their teachers from 22 countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bulgaria, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Myanmar, New Zealand, ROK, Russia, Sri Lanka, San Marino, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Britain and United States, attend the camp this year. Of these countries, Antigua and Barbuda and Uzbekistan are the first timers at the camp.

The 10 day-long camp will run a rich program. In its “Chinese Culture”, “I Love Shanghai” and “Country Theme Show” activities, the young campers will have opportunities to experience the traditional tie-dyeing art and Hanfu (traditional clothing of the Han) culture, while “Urban Orienteering Competition”, Zhujiajiao ancient town and Shanghai Disney Resort will give them a taste of Shanghai’s landscape, history and modernity. They will also put up booths and make speeches to present their respective cultures. In addition, they will visit such landmarks as Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai History Museum, Shanghai Museum of Natural History, the Old City and Tianzifang. The camp puts the youngsters into groups at random, so as to encourage more and close interactions between them. The foreign campers will also have the opportunity to stay with a local host family for one day and learn about the local customs and life.

The camp T-shirt carries a prominent logo of Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, which observes its 60th anniversary this year. Its green color represents youth, dream, hope and peace and symbolizes the young people from various countries progressing hand in hand. The charmingly naïve little monkey in the design stands for the Year of Monkey and gives a sense of vigor and vitality, while the dove holding an olive branch in the mouth implies peace and friendship and means that Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries will, upholding its purpose of “making friends for the country”, continue to carry forward the trans-border, trans-time and space and trans-civilization exchange and learn from each other with people of other countries and regions.

Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries will follow up on the camp activities through its WeChat public account SPAFFC.
