Ying Yong Meets President of Italy

    On February 24, Ying Yong, mayor of Shanghai, met with H.E. Sergio Mattarella, president of Italy, and his delegation. On behalf of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the people of Shanghai, he extended warm welcome to the Italian president.

    Ying Yong said since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, particularly that of comprehensive strategic partnership in 2004, China and Italy have seen a frequent exchange of high-level visits, smooth development of their economic and trade relations, and steady deepening of their cultural exchange. As China’s economic center and window for external contacts, Shanghai adheres to serving our national strategy and is committed to promoting the cooperation in various areas between China and Italy. Italy has unique advantages and rich experience in many aspects, which are worth drawing on by Shanghai in its development. Shanghai would like to, under the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and the Belt and Road Initiative framework, further boost cooperation with Italy in the economic, trade, scientific & technological, medical & health, fashion & creative, cultural and tourist fields. We welcome Italian businesses to Shanghai and participate in the building of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and the science & technology innovation center, and we will also encourage Shanghai enterprises to invest in Italy.

    President Sergio Mattarella said both Italy and China are ancient civilizations with a long history and splendid culture. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970, the two countries have seen sound development of their relations and continuous advancement of their pragmatic cooperation. Italy would like to become an active part of the Belt and Road Initiative building and work with China to drive the opening of the global market. Italy and Shanghai have already had much exchange and cooperation in economy, trade, education and culture, and as potential is great for cooperation in science & technology and innovation, he called for the two sides to further deepen cooperation and usher in the 50thanniversary of Italy-China diplomatic ties with greater achievement.
