Ying Yong Meets Mayor of Montreal

    On February 19, Ying Yong, mayor of Shanghai, met with Denis Coderre, mayor of Montreal, and Julie Boulet, tourism minister of Quebec province, Canada, and the delegation they led, and attended a ceremony for the signing of an agreement on cooperation in tourism between Shanghai and Quebec province and Montreal.

    Ying Yong expressed congratulations on the inauguration of direct air flight between Shanghai and Montreal and said China and Canada have had a frequent exchangeof high-level visits and smooth economic and trade relations in recent years. Shanghai and Montreal became sister cities way back in 1985, and Shanghai established in 2011 sister-city/province relationship with Quebec province, where Montreal is located, which “has brought us even closer”. In the last 30 years and more, Shanghai and Montreal have accomplished great achievements in cooperationin the economic, trade, scientific & technological, urban planning, cultural & art, horticulture and other areas. Shanghai is currently concentrating on building itself into an international economic, financial, trade and shipping center and a globally influential science & technology innovation center. It has set as its development goal to become an outstanding global city by 2040, so prospects are broad for cooperation between the two sides. He hoped the two cities will give play to their respective advantages and enhance exchange and cooperation in economy, trade, science & technology and environmental protection and, taking advantage of the opening of direct air flights, vigorously develop tourism and promote friendly ties between the governments and the people of the two cities.

    Mayor Denis Coderre and Minister Julie Boulet said Montreal and Quebec province attach great importance to their sister-city relationship with Shanghai. They were happy to see direct flights between Montreal and Shanghai becoming a reality. They called on the two sides to seize the opportunity to further deepen cooperationin tourism and environmental protection, boost exchange and mutual learning and lift their sister-city cooperation and exchange to a higher level.
