President of Canton of Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, Visits Shanghai

    Elisabeth Ackermann, president of the executive council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, visited Shanghai at the head of a delegation from April 7 to 9, 2017. On April 8, Ying Yong, mayor of Shanghai, and Wu Zhiming, chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee, met with President Elisabeth Ackermann and her party separately.

    Ying Yong said China and Switzerland have set a fine example for friendly cooperation between countries of different sizes, with different social systems and at different stages of development. The innovation strategic partnership between China and Switzerland has provided greater space for the development of cooperation and exchange between Shanghai and Basel. Since becoming sister cities in 2007, Shanghai and Basel have had frequent friendly exchanges and deep-going cooperation. At present, Shanghai is accelerating the pace of building a science & technology innovation center with a global reach. As Basel is Switzerland’s most innovative region, the two sides can increase cooperation and exchange in life science, chemical industry, tourism, culture, education and other areas.

    Wu Zhiming said Shanghai and Basel, which mark their 10thanniversary of sister-city relationship this year, have achieved gratifying results in their pragmatic cooperation in areas including education, health and environmental protection. Shanghai has been deepening reforms in various areas, which has created new opportunities for the in-depth friendly exchange between the two sister cities. He hoped the two sides will expand cooperation and share experience in urban administration, bio-pharmaceutical and cultural areas.

    Elisabeth Ackermann said in the past 10 years as sister cities Shanghai and Basel have seen productive cooperation and exchange in the economic, trade, scientific &technological and life science areas. He called for the two sides to further supplement each other by utilizing their respective strengths and deepen friendly cooperation.
