Han Zheng Meets New US Ambassador to China

    On September 13, Han Zheng, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, met with H.E. Terry Branstad, the new ambassador of the United States to China, and his party.

    Han Zheng said Shanghai has maintained close economic ties with different parts of the United States over the years and since Shanghai and San Francisco, Chicago and Houston became sister cities, the two sides have carried out productive exchange and cooperation in the economic, trade, educational, cultural and other areas. Increasing exchange and cooperation between the local governments will be conducive to the development of friendly relations between the two countries, to which Shanghai would like to contribute more. He went on to say that so many US firms have gained growth in Shanghai, and they have participated in and born witness to Shanghais reform and opening up and progress in development. Quite a number of them have been members of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai (IBLAC), which have offered very good suggestions for Shanghais development. We hope very much that through meeting with the US businesses in Shanghai, Ambassador Branstad will gain a better understanding of China and Shanghais progress in unswervingly carrying out reform and opening up. We also sincerely welcome the ambassador to visit Shanghai often and have sincere and candid exchange of views.

    Ambassador Terry Branstad called Shanghai an impressive city and said this beautiful city has successfully developed its economy and is a leader in reform and innovation. It has provided so many development opportunities for the American businesses. It is important for the US states and Chinese provinces to have close cooperation, which is conducive to deepening the friendly relations between the United States and China. He would like very much to come to Shanghai often to better enhance mutual understanding and the friendly cooperation between regions of the two countries. He also hoped more Chinese enterprises will also feel at home in his country.
