Mayor's call-in talk show focuses on environment

Mayor Ying Yong stressed environmental protection of Shanghai's rivers and lakes in a 90-minute radio talk show on FM93.4 yesterday. His talk was relayed by online media such as and the Weibo and WeChat accounts of the Municipal Information Office.

The CPC Shanghai Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Government introduced the "river chief" system in February to ensure the efficiency of river protection and water pollution treatment.

A three-level "river chief" system is being established across the city with municipal, district and sub-district (town) officials held responsible for the health of rivers in their areas. Party and government officials are assigned the jobs of river chiefs.

Ying called on people in all walks of life to safeguard the environment and support the "river chief" system in the effort to restore the ecosystem of local rivers.

The mayor urged listeners to reduce their garbage as much as possible and give suggestions for environmental improvement.
