City leaders check waterfront facelift project

Mayor Ying Yong inspected thewaterfrontfacelift project along the Huangpu River early this month and askedHuangpu and Xuhui district officials to copy theexperiences of advanced countries in carrying out the project, serve people’s needs and tourism, and make Shanghai a world-class city.

Ying urged officials to aim for high standards and work hard to ensure the project is completed within theyear.

The facelift project covers 8.4 kilometers of waterfront area in Huangpu District. Many big-name companies are located there. China’s Internet giant Tencent Holdings and online video company,Mango TV, will set up offices there as well.

The mayor said the project should include the construction of jogging and cycling lanes on the riverside. Officials should remove all obstacles with efficiency and guarantee enough space for public use withoutencroaching on the waterway.

He said the project should withstand the test of time and rival that for the ThamesRiver of London and the Seine River of Paris.

Ying stressed the preservation of historic buildings along the river and environment protection to meet the expectation of the people.
