    Party leadership in Shanghai tribute

President Xi Jinping (center) leads the six other members of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo Standing Committee, fists raised, in a symbolic retaking of the Party oath during their visit to the site in Shanghai where the first CPC National Congress was held in 1921. The others are (from left) Han Zheng, Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Premier Li Keqiang, Wang Yang and Zhao Leji. The congress was originally held in the French concession area in Shanghai but was moved to a boat on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing in neighboring Zhejiang Province due to an interruption by police. Xi, who is also the Party chief, and the other leaders also visited the Nanhu Lake Revolution Museum in Zhejiang yesterday afternoon. The leaders paid homage to the Party’s birthplace and founding fathers. Twelve delegates attended that first CPC National Congress in July 1921, representing more than 50 Party members nationwide. On October 18 this year, more than 2,300 delegates attended the 19th CPC National Congress, representing over 89 million Party members. “The Communist Party was born here,” Xi said. “These are the roots of the Party.”
