Downtown's biggest live poultry market ready to open

A worker weighs a rooster today at the Sanjiaodi wet market in downtown Hongkou District as preparations are being made for the facility’s full opening, scheduled for Friday, under a strict set of safety rules. It will be the biggest live poultry market in downtown Shanghai. The live-poultry sections will be segregated from other food sections. Shoppers must follow a strict procedure of virus-prevention measures to pick up the chicken, which is slaughtered in designated spots inside the market. All live poultry markets and transactions were shut down in the city after the H7N9 bird flu broke out this past spring, killing a total of 43 in China. The poultry markets in Shanghai have been gradually reopening with intensified watchdog supervision and safety measures.
