Jiao Tong to launch China's largest pediatrics college

Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine announced yesterday it will establish a pediatrics college to cater to the dire need for pediatricians and the boom in newborn babies in China.

With the "Universal Two-child Policy" rolled out in 2016, it’s predicted that China will have 292 million infants and children up to the age of 14 by 2020. It will face a shortage of 85,000 pediatricians to meet the 0.69 pediatricians per 1,000 children goal, according to data released by the university.

The new pediatrics college will cooperate with Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, Shanghai Children’s Hospital, and other hospitals’ pediatrics departments affiliated to Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

The college will be able to confer degrees equivalent to Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Medicine and offer corresponding courses. The courses will be integrated with existing disciplines in the university such as internal medicine, surgery, neurology, and infectious disease.

It will be the largest pediatrics college in China and its courses will be combined with medical research and clinical practice.

A new edition of the textbook Pediatrics will also be launched. It will put more focus on pediatrics basics and more symptom-oriented treatments.
