Six new convention ambassadors appointed to attract more international conferences

Shanghai Tourism Administration appointed six more "Shanghai Convention Ambassadors" on Tuesday to introduce more top international conventions to be held in Shanghai.

They are all specialists from different fields, including Ran Zhihua, director of Shanghai Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Center; Li Zhiqiang, founding partner of Jin Mao Partners; Zhang Tianyu, director of the otorhinolaryngology plastic surgery department of Shanghai Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital; He Yue, director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of Shanghai No. 9 Hospital; Yang Jun, director of the otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery department of Xinhua Hospital; and Xue Xiaoyuan, visiting professor of school of art, Renmin University.

So far, the administration has appointed 110 social elites and industrial leading figures as the city‘s convention ambassadors to take advantage of their influence to apply for the hosting rights of more international conferences.

Such conventions have brought remarkable social and economic benefits. On the one hand the conventions can show China‘s research capabilities in related fields, promoting more extensive academic exchanges; on the other hand they would boost development of businesses, tourism, and hotel industries.

For example, the six-day International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Congress held this year in Shanghai drew 5,000 attendees and brought tens of millions of yuan in revenues for hotel industries.
