City to classify cruisers on the Huangpu River according to their service quality
12.22.2017

The 45-kilometer-long footpath along the two sides of the Huangpu River will open to the public by the end of this year, providing local residents an ideal venue to walk, jog or run.

However, they may also take the cruisers plying on the river to see the amazing scenes on the two sides.

The Shanghai Tourism Administration and the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Transport have recently introduced an evaluation guideline to classify the Huangpu River cruisers and the piers facilities according to their service quality.

In March, STM and Shanghai Tourism Trade Association organized companies in the cruiser industry to learn from Chongqings experience in the cruiser operation, evaluation, and inspected two cruisers in Chongqing.

The guideline stipulates that the classification of the cruiser has three levels, namely, three stars, four stars, and five stars, more stars meaning higher level in safety, service quality, hygiene, and management.

Cai Yao, vice general manager of Shanghai Huangpu River Cruise Co, said the classification is important, for the cruiser ticket prices were previously unified, leaving cruiser companies little motivation in improving their service and facilities. The classification will provide tourists more choice and introduce competition into the industry.

Tourism companies held a marketing event promotion in March. The participants include Spring Airlines, China International Travel Service, Ctrip, and Lvmama. Later, tourism promotion events were also held in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, with the Huangpu River Cruisers as a key tourism project.

With a series of promotions, as of November 25, the total tourists of the Huangpu River had seen a year-on-year increase of 16.03 percent; the industry revenue reached 157 million yuan (US$ 24 million), up 15.8 percent year-on-year.

In the near future, supporting facilities such as water sports will be added to the Huangpu River tourism to attract more tourists.
