Yangpu targets overseas top talent

    Yangpu District is recruiting hi-tech professionals from Silicon Valley and Seattle to develop innovation and entrepreneurship in the district.

    Over 500 foreign entrepreneurs and Chinese students studying abroad attended two recruiting events at Stanford University and Global Innovation Exchange in Seattle this week.

    The district has 70 openings in local companies and 200 at universities and medical institutes.

    It said several students had signed up with companies to work in Yangpu after graduation. Yangpu officials promised them and the entrepreneurs of “innovation friendly” policies and environment.

    “Please come to Yangpu as long as you have innovative ideas and are willing to face challenges,” said Li Yueqi, Party secretary of Yangpu.

    The district government plans to spend 20 million yuan (US$3 million) each year to support overseas professionals willing to start their businesses in Yangpu.

    Professionals who studied or worked overseas and are deemed top talent will receive a million yuan in assistance fund for startup projects along with 500,000 yuan in housing subsidy.

    Yangpu has 20 science and technology parks and 79 innovative parks with a total space of more than 2.3 million square meters. It is also home to top Chinese universities, including Fudan, Tongji and the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, besides over 100 research institutes.

    The Pudong New Area has also unveiled preferential policies to lure foreign and Chinese talent from abroad.

    Xuhui District has built about 2,000 low-rent apartments along Huangpu River to accommodate professionals with the lowest rents at 1,800 yuan a month.
