Shanghai Electric Group signs contract on world's largest thermal power station in Dubai

Shanghai Electric Group Co and ACWA Power Co signed a general contract on Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's phase-four megawatt power station last Friday, which will be the world's largest concentrated solar thermal power station.

With an investment of US$3.86 billion, DEWA plans to develop the phase-four of the stage one of the solar power station. Silkroad Fund and the United Arab Emirates also gave financial support to the project.

Mohammed Adbullah Abunayyan, board chairman of ACWA Power Co, said the project is closely linked to the UAE's strategic development plan which requires 75 percent of the UAE's energy supply to come from renewable resources by 2050. Also, the concentrated solar thermal power stations are able to produce power 24 hours a day, making its production cost for the first time lower than US$0.07.

The project marks the conversion from SEGC's traditional thermal power to new energies and a new stage for concentrated solar thermal power technologies, said one official with SEGC. The project is also the first large-scale engineering procurement construction in the Middle East regions for SEGC and it will also pave the way for new energy projects in the domestic and foreign markets.
