Pledge to tackle leak causes
07.19.2011

Metro officials yesterday pledged to improve construction techniques and examine new ways to tackle subsidence, following widespread complaints of water leaking into subway stations.

Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said serious leaks were reported at 21 locations, including stations, passageways and trains, on nine of the Metro's 11 lines during heavy rainfall last week.

"The leaks were caused by various factors," said Ying Minghong, president of the Metro group. "But still it exposed many of our problems."

Ying admitted the operator was sometimes slow to react but insisted regular operations were unaffected and the network is safe.

Metro officials said water leaked into the system as a result of subsidence on recently built parts of the network and through damaged covers on overground parts.

At present, workers usually inject cement into cracks to tackle subsidence.

But Ying said builders must improve their techniques to reduce the amount of remedial work required.

Officials said on stations currently under construction, cement will be clad in waterproof material.
