Officials get tough with street sellers

The city is to strengthen its management of street venders, fruit sellers especially, local public sanitation authorities said yesterday.

No fruit vender will be able to operate within 1 kilometer of the Expo site, 25 scenery areas and 90 main roads. In other areas, they can only set up booths with the permission of residential areas. Residential area authorities will also be responsible for managing the venders.

"The booths should not affect residents' normal life, traffic or public sanitation," said Lu Jianping, deputy director of the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Administrative Bureau. "This is the most important point."

Also yesterday, the city government announced the launch of the annual "summer hotline." People with problems involving water or power should be able to have them fixed within two hours. The water hotline is 962740 and the power one 95598.

Both will be open around the clock from this weekend.
